Impact Evaluation Course

Our Impact Evaluation course is a tailor-made training for rural development professionals who wish to build capacities in impact evaluation applied to their sector. The course content draws from the best international practices and field experiences from IFAD’s Independent Office of Evaluation (IOE) and has a workshop-based design that allows participants to work through tasks and problems that mimic their daily activities.

  • Introduction to Impact Evaluation and refreshers
  • Experimental Evaluations (Experimental Evaluations and Sample Size Calculations)
  • Non-Experimental Approaches I (Regression Discontinuity Design, Instrumental Variables and Encouragement Design, and Difference-in-Differences)
  • Non-Experimental Approaches II (Propensity Score Matching, Difference-in-Differences with Propensity Score Matching)
  • Challenges in Evaluating Rural Projects and Case Studies

WHAT YOU’LL LEARN

  • Learn the importance and the types of questions impact evaluations can answer.
  • Understand key concepts of impact evaluations (e.g. counterfactual, treatment and control groups, randomization, impact calculation).
  • Identify when and how to use each of the most common approaches (experimental evaluation, difference-in-differences, instrumental variables, regression discontinuity design, and matching).
  • Recognize the main challenges in evaluating rural projects.
